What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that helps individuals to access support and live independently.
The NDIS is managed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
How can I find out if I am eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible to receive NDIS funding, a person must meet requirements regarding:
- Age
- Residency status
- Impact of disability
To learn more about requirements, check out the NDIS eligibility checklist.
If you are comfortable that you meet the requirements and are ready to apply for the NDIS, you can reach out to the NDIA by calling 1800 800 110 or by submitting an online request form. It’s important to note that applying for the NDIS involves an assessment that will include a number of steps. These steps can include meetings, reviews and reports.
What happens if I am eligible for the NDIS?
If you are eligible for the NDIS, someone from the NDIA will work with you to make a plan. Sometimes a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) also assists. The plan considers the different areas of your life and your goals to identify the right kind of support for you.
How can I go about managing my NDIS plan?
There are three ways your NDIS funding can be managed: self-managed, plan-managed or agency-managed.
With self-managed you can:
-
Manage your plan yourself, rather than your plan be managed by a plan manager or the NDIA.
-
Work with both registered and non-registered providers to access support.
-
Use your NDIS funding to book independent support workers via providers like Mable.
-
-
Work with a plan manager like Leap in!. Plan managers support by managing payments, tracking budgets and providing practical guidance to help you navigate the NDIS and get the most out of your plan.

With agency-managed (also known as NDIA managed) you can:
- Only use your NDIS funding to pay for NDIS-registered providers, so you cannot use your NDIS funding to pay for independent support workers booked on Mable.
Can I purchase consumables using my NDIS funding?
You may be eligible to use NDIS funding to purchase consumables if it aligns with your plan.

What if I am not eligible for the NDIS?
If you are not eligible for the NDIS there are a number of supports and services provided by the Government and community sector. You can access a list of these supports and services on the NDIS website.
If you are not eligible for the NDIS, privately paying for support may be a good fit for you. With Mable you can pay for support work privately.
